Conversation 3: The Structure

Only after the life plan and the numbers does it make sense to talk solutions.

By the third conversation, we finally arrive at the part most people wanted to start with: the solutions. The accounts, the investments, the pensions, the protection. And the whole point of the Planning on Purpose framework is that we get here last — deliberately, and only once the earlier work is done.

Solutions come last, and that’s the point

In this video, I walk through the Structure conversation — where we translate a clear life and clear numbers into the actual arrangements that deliver them. This is the stage where products finally enter the picture. Not before. Because a product chosen before the plan is just a guess with a brochure.

The reason this ordering matters is simple: once the life and the numbers are genuinely clear, the structure almost chooses itself. The plan defines the job each element has to do, and that turns an overwhelming set of options into a manageable set of decisions. You are no longer comparing everything against everything. You are selecting what fits a brief you have already written.

Structure before solutions, in practice

This is where plans over products stops being a slogan and becomes a method:

  • The goals from conversation one tell us what the structure is for.
  • The numbers from conversation two tell us what it has to deliver.
  • Only then do we choose the solutions that fit — nothing sooner.

It is also where the weak-link thinking pays off. With the whole picture visible, the gaps and fragilities are obvious, and the structure can be built to remove them rather than paper over them. The weak link breaks first — so this is where we make sure there isn’t one left unaddressed.

The video covers how a clear plan narrows the field of solutions, why this conversation is short and calm when the first two are done properly, and how reality, direction and structure come together into a plan you can actually stand on.
