Income here.
Pension there.
Property elsewhere.
No plan that connects them.

If your financial life lives across jurisdictions — UK, GCC, Europe — the gap isn't money. It's structure. Planning on Purpose is the framework built for people whose lives don't fit a template.

Your priorities. All connected. One plan.

These are the things people come to me wanting to make true. Each one looks small in isolation — together, they're a plan. Pick what feels familiar; that's usually where the first conversation starts.

One of these your starting point? Let's talk it through.

I've been the expat. I know how the moving parts collide.

I'm Paul Butler, Private Wealth Partner at Skybound Wealth Management in Dubai. I have worked in finance and financial services for 30 years, including 15 years advising internationally mobile professionals across the GCC, UK and Europe. These are people who earn well, move between jurisdictions, and find the financial world doesn't always keep pace with the life they're building.

British expat, Dubai for over a decade. I've lived the complexity from the inside: the visa, the salary in one currency, the pension in another, the property somewhere else, the will that doesn't quite cover where you actually live.

"This isn't a financial presentation. It's a conversation."

Most people aren't failing — they're running without structure. The income is there. The ambition is there. But the decisions aren't connected. My role is to bring that together — to ask the uncomfortable questions before life does it for you.

I'm not a product distributor. The value is the framework — Planning on Purpose. Plans over products. Structure before solutions. Every time.

Financial planning has two sides. Most people only get one.

Building wealth is one side. Protecting your plan from life is the other. Planning on Purpose starts with a different question: not "what should you invest in?" — but "what is your life telling us about what you need, and in what order?"

CONVERSATION 01Reality

Where are you now?

The honest map of where you actually stand today — not where you think you stand.

In this conversation
  • The auditAssets, liabilities, exposures and gaps — across every jurisdiction you're in.
  • Before It BreaksThe 15-point stress test — finding the weak links before life does.
  • Honesty over flatteryNo assumptions. No flattering numbers. The starting point everything else is built on.
CONVERSATION 02Direction

Where are you going?

Life first. Numbers second. The plan starts with what matters to you — then we price it.

In this conversation
  • Life FirstThe flashpoints — retirement, property, education, jurisdiction change — placed on a timeline.
  • Numbers SecondReal costs on a real timeline. Inflation-adjusted. Jurisdiction-aware.
  • The pictureAbstract goals become specific milestones — visible, comparable, real.
CONVERSATION 03Structure

How do we get there?

Solutions arrive last — only after we know what they need to achieve. Sequence matters.

In this conversation
  • Solutions designedTax, wrappers, protection, cashflow, legal — built for your circumstances, not a template.
  • The architectureEvery part connects to the others — and to the timeline we agreed in conversation two.
  • Review & AdaptLife changes. The plan adapts — by design, not by accident.
Plans over products.Structure over reaction.Clarity before action.

1
Will (or Lack Of)
Legal Foundation

If something happened this weekend, is your will valid in every country where you hold assets? A single will may not deal efficiently with assets and family arrangements across multiple jurisdictions. The right structure depends on where you live, where your assets are held and your family circumstances.

Is my will up to date in each jurisdiction? Would my family know where to start?
Score

2
Health & Life Crisis
Critical Coverage

Most expat health policies cover less than people assume. Critical illness cover is different from medical cover — and many have neither at adequate levels.

If I couldn't work for six months, what would happen financially?

Job Loss & Income Shock
The UAE Reality

In the UAE, job loss isn't just income loss — your visa clock starts. A loss of employment in the UAE can affect income, residency and family arrangements at the same time. How many months of essential spending could you cover from immediately accessible cash?

How many months could I sustain my lifestyle if income stopped tomorrow?

Guardianship
Protecting Your Children

If something happened to both parents, who steps in — and is that legally recognised in the country where you live?

Have I legally appointed a guardian, applicable in my current jurisdiction?

Unsustainable Debt
The Credit Trap

Credit is easy across the GCC: car finance, mortgage, deposit loans, off-plan plans. Individually manageable, stacked together fragile.

What % of income is committed before I have a choice? What if income dropped 30%?
Score
5

Lifestyle pressure breaks cashflow first. This cluster is about margin — what keeps you calm when life accelerates.

6
Housing & Living Arrangements
Your Biggest Commitment

Housing is usually your largest monthly commitment and your least flexible one. Over-committing on property without stress-testing is the most common vulnerability.

If rent or mortgage went up 20%, could I sustain it?
Score

7
Inadequate Emergency Fund
Time Buys Options

Six months of accessible expenses, separate from investments. Without a cushion, a crisis forces liquidation at the worst moment.

Do I have six months of expenses accessible — in a useful currency if I lose my GCC income?

Retirement Planning Overlooked
The Single Biggest Expense

There is no meaningful state pension for expats in the GCC. Financial independence isn't an age — it's a number, and most haven't calculated it.

What is my actual retirement number? Am I saving enough to reach it?
Score

9
Currency Fluctuations
The Silent Erosion

Major currencies can move materially over short periods, changing the real value of income, assets and future spending. Exchange rates, spreads and fees can differ materially between providers, particularly on repeated or substantial transfers.

What currency risk am I carrying? Am I getting the best transfer rates?
Score

10
Lack of Diversification
Concentration Risk

Concentration in one asset, provider, or currency is the most common high-earner vulnerability. Diversification feels boring until it saves you.

Is my wealth spread across asset types, providers, and currencies?
Score
5

These don't hurt today. They hurt later, quietly. Where the highest earners get caught — because the absence of urgency creates the illusion of safety.

11
Career & Age Factors
The Transition Risk

The older you get, the harder it is to replace income — and fewer roles exist at your level. Being "deleted" by a strategic review without a plan is not an edge case.

If my role disappeared tomorrow, how long to replace my income? Do I have a transition cushion?

Underestimating Insurance
For the Unplannable

Insurance is for what you can't plan for. Critical illness cover is fundamentally different from medical cover. Many policies are inadequate or don't exist.

If I couldn't work for two years, what would happen financially?

Property & Ownership Risks
Brilliant But Not Always Liquid

Buying without understanding local laws and cross-jurisdictional tax can cause serious problems. International rental income is rarely as attractive as it looks while you're in country.

Do I understand the tax implications of my property if I change jurisdiction?

No Concrete Financial Plan
The Most Significant Vulnerability

Without a plan, you're navigating without a compass. Saving is good — but is it enough? Where do overlapping goals collide?

Is my financial activity connected to a destination, with timelines and milestones?

Inaction & Family Disagreement
The Human Factor

Families fall out because nothing is clear, not because they're bad people. Inaction compounds quietly — and is nearly always avoidable with structure.

Are my partner and I aligned on financial direction? Are decisions being delayed?

⚠ Your three weakest links

Your lowest scores cluster around legal foundation, emergency cash, and currency. Three quick fixes that compound into significant resilience.

The will and the emergency fund are immediate — both can be addressed inside 30 days. The currency strategy is structural, and pays back over years rather than weeks.

Your lowest score is your weak link. Weak links break first.

A UK will is not automatically a complete UAE estate plan. The answer is usually yes where the family has UAE assets, minor children or a local execution problem to solve - but the two wills must be designed as one cross-border arrangement.
